On September 21, 2024, B-SCAN, in collaboration with
the Protibondhi Nagorik Shangathaner Parishad (PNSP) and Sightsavers' Equality
Bangladesh Campaign, organized an open discussion titled "Invisible Citizens with Disabilities in Public Spaces: Our Hope for Building a Discrimination-Free Bangladesh." The event took place at
the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Faculty of Social Sciences, University
of Dhaka.
Distinguished speakers included renowned poet, philosopher,
social and human rights activist, and environmentalist Farhad Mazhar, Director
General of Bangla Academy, Professor Mohammad Azam, Executive Director of Tauri
Foundation, Ashfaqul Kabir and Md. Zahidul Kabir, Gender and Disability
Inclusion - Lead at BRAC.
The keynote address was delivered by B-SCAN Director
Iftekhar Mahmud, highlighting the challenges faced by persons with disabilities
in public spaces and the urgent need for inclusive policies. The discussion was
moderated by B-SCAN General Secretary Salma Mahbub, ensuring an engaging and
thought-provoking dialogue.
This event provided a crucial platform to address
the invisibility of persons with disabilities in the recent discussion that is
going on throughout the country after July revolution, emphasizing the
collective responsibility to foster a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
